A Somali firm, built around the people it serves

Damal Consulting Limited is a Somali consulting firm with headquarters in Garowe and an operational office in Mogadishu. We have worked across Puntland and Banadir since 2022, with Somali staff who live in the communities our programmes serve.

The damal is the acacia that shades a gathering — a tree Somalis have met under for generations to settle disputes, welcome travellers and make decisions together. It is where our name comes from and how we work: convening people rather than arriving with the answer.

We combine technical delivery — solar PV, electrical engineering, financial management, monitoring and evaluation — with the community mobilisation needed to make any of it last beyond a grant cycle.

Youth-Led Clean Energy & Resilient Communities Initiative

Y-CERI enables young people in Garowe and Mogadishu to mobilise communities, businesses, technical expertise and public institutions around clean-energy, environmental and livelihood problems they have identified themselves.

Seven components

  1. Youth clean energy & community action network

    Youth Action Teams in Garowe and Mogadishu, trained in leadership, community mobilisation, clean energy and resource mobilisation.

  2. Women in clean energy leadership

    Visible leadership and mentoring routes for young Somali women in engineering, renewable energy and entrepreneurship.

  3. Community clean energy action

    Identifying and installing practical energy solutions for women-owned microenterprises and households.

  4. Clean cooking and healthy homes

    Youth-led awareness campaigns, private-sector mobilisation and subsidised access to cleaner cooking alternatives.

  5. Somali business for community impact

    Engaging Somali businesses in recurring commitments of finance, equipment and technical expertise.

  6. Community co-contribution and revolving support

    A beneficiary co-contribution model with revolving resources that reach additional households over time.

  7. Youth–community–government dialogue

    Documenting community challenges and using the evidence to engage decision-makers constructively.

Proof it works

The solar light initiative, 2024–2025.

Young people connected to Damal asked local businesses to fund portable solar lights, then sold them on at subsidised prices to women-owned microbusinesses and households. Buyers contributed part of the cost themselves, which created ownership and stretched a small pot of money considerably further than a giveaway would have.

Teams are assembled around each engagement rather than fixed: a solar installation is led by our electrical engineers with community educators alongside them, while an evaluation pairs MERL specialists with enumerators recruited from the districts being studied.
